Saving the Land and creating Great Wines

Following in the footsteps of his father, Henri Schoenheitz puts his heart and soul into his Munster Valley vineyard (Vins Schoenheitz) and started to take care of his own winery. There has been a vineyard here for a long time but it has special challenges. The land was damaged in the Second World War, so Henri senior had to work hard to save it and managed to turn it to the perfect place to a wine growing. The land of the winery is steeply sloped which also brings problems. Henri junior has managed the vineyard with his wife Dominique since the 1980s. They are both trained in viticulture.

Range of Wines from Vins Schoenheitz

They have 17 hectares of vines in two appellations, the regional Alsace appellation and Crémant d’Alsace. The soil is mostly granite. The slopes get plenty of sunshine that influence positively to the grapes. Henri avoids using chemicals as much as possible. Mostly they grow Pinot Gris, Riesling Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Noir. A special feature is the lieux-dits. These are specific parts of the vineyard with the oldest vines. Vins Schoenheitz has 4 lieux-dits—Linsenberg, Holder, Herrenreben and Val Saint-Grégoire. Each has its own distinctive terroir and grows absolutely unique and different grape types.

Sparkling Wines and Oak Aged Splendor

On the lower part of the slopes of the vineyards, there are growing Pinot Auxerrois and Pinot Blanc for their sparkling wine. This winery also produces two great dry wines called Tokade, a Pinot Gris vinified and aged in oak barrels, and the other Audace, a Riesling vinified and aged in acacia barrels.
