Winemaking takes place in three main Croatian wine regions: Eastern Continental, Western Continental, and Coastal. These wine regions are further divided into smaller wine sub-regions. The majority of high-quality wines come from coastal regions of Croatia wine country.
Croatian wine regions, that are stretching across almost the entire coastal area of the country, are the main wine producers. The Coastal region covers almost 530 kilometers of complex coastline as well as offshore islands. The grape varieties Malvasia and Refosk together with famous Teran are dominating these territories. Teran grape variety is developing on the karst soils of the region in combination with the terra rossa soils that can often be seen in the Mediterranean. This variety produces fruity wines with a deep dark red color, which is why they are also called Sangue del Carso (Carser blood) in Friuli. There are also international grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Riesling.
