Guramishvili’s Marani: winery combining traditional and modern practices

The Story of Guramishvili’s Marani

Guramishvili’s Marani is located in Saguramo and has a special historical significance for the area. The wine cellar belonged to a family of Ilia Chavchavadze, a famous Georgian public figure. Today after the KTW(Kakhetian Traditional Winemaking) company acquired it, the ancient wine cellar had been restored and rare wine grape varieties are being cultivated in this area. Today, Guramishvili’s Marani regularly bottles wine and classic champagne using Georgian traditional methods. It should be noted that in Japan, at one of the most prestigious wine awards -“Sakura 2020” the sparkling wine “Grand Reserve Brut 2015” from Guramishvili’s Marani was awarded a gold medal.

Ancient Restored Vineyards of the Winery

The vineyard plots which were once owned by Chavchavadze himself have currently been leased out to the KTW Company. After his assassination, the current plot was turned into a cow pasture and dumping site. Old historical pitchers were filled with waste and dust. The takeover of KTW Company has allowed the territory to regain its status as a prime vine-growing region. The winery is currently focusing on the restoration and development of old Georgian grape varieties. The plots are currently occupied by an old and extremely rare native grape variety that has likely been forgotten. Keeping up with the innovation, a modern water supply system has been put into place ensuring that all vines have ample amount of water.
