Vazisubani Estate: reviving history through Qvevri winemaking

A Splendid Estate Revived

In the 1800s the estate belonged to a renowned nobleman Sulkhan Chavchadaze, a pioneer in winemaking. His contribution to the cultural and educational development of the Kakheti region is paramount, and the wine estate founded in 1891 is no exception. Over time, neglect leads the once-prosperous estate to deteriorate. Until 2013, when the estate transformed. Into an iconic destination, one rooted in its rich history, uninterrupted winemaking tradition, exceptional cuisine, and outstanding hospitality. The vineyard was replanted and the old wine cellar restored.

The Vazisubani Estate Vineyards

The vineyards are located in the terroir of Kakheti, an ideal area for the already famous Georgian indigenous varieties, such as red Saperavi together with its counterparts from whites: Rkatsiteli, Kisi, Khikhvi, and Kakhuri Mtsvane. At Vazisubani Estate, under the careful watch of Lado Uzunashvili, the Head Winemaker, homegrown Qvevri wines are produced. Each harvest at Vazisubani symbolizes the wine culture of the estate. The bottles are aimed at celebrating ancient Georgian passion for wine and winemaking.

Qvevri Wines at the Estate

All the wines of the estate are made using native grapes fermented in Qvevris. The traditional Georgian wine-making technique of Qvevris has an uninterrupted history of 8000 years. Qvevris are giant size terracotta vessels inserted into the ground at the mezzanine level. Inside those wines are fermented and then aged on skins and lees, which are only taken out during the springtime. From caring for the soil to vine formation and handling throughout the year, from harvesting and vinifying to bottles aged at the cellars, well-tried philosophies are incarnated into practice. This combined with an uninterrupted production cycle in the 140-year-old cellars yields superior results delighting even the most experienced wine experts.
