Decades of Winemaking and Long History in Viniculture

For many decades, the De Fazio family has grown grapes and produced wine. It is possible to trace their family lineage to Castagna, a small village in the town of Carlopoli in the southern Italian province of Catanzaro, which has a long history of viniculture and producing full-flavored, rich wines. The De Fazio Vineyard crest combines traditional Italian symbolism to express the fundamental attributes found in all wines from the vineyard. It symbolizes the vineyard's distinctive heritage and the dedication it contributes to the traditional, old-world art of natural wine-making.

The Vineyard where it all begins

The Greenock-based De Fazio Vineyard, which produces exceptional single-vineyard wines under the Zitta and De Fazio labels, is 100% Australian-owned and -operated. The vineyard is entirely on mild hills; the highest point is 307 meters (1,007 feet) above sea level. The ripening conditions in this area are diverse, with summertime temperatures ranging from 35°C during the day to 8°C at night (95°F - 46.4°F). The grapes grown in this intra-region are reported to have special qualities that Barossan winemakers particularly value. There are also cooling gully winds in the late afternoon and early morning. The vines must be in perfect harmony with the ecosystem in which they are placed to create the highest-quality wines. It is crucial to have the ideal terroir for the varietal that is planted, but it is also essential to know and respect nature's cycles. After the fruit is harvested, a smooth winemaking process makes sure the final product meets the required standards.

Expert Winemakers and Exquisite Wines

Each vintage refers to the distinct qualities of the North-West Barossa Valley sub-appellation and the growing season during which the wine was made. They are naturally created by hand in an old-fashioned manner, with little intervention and lots of time to mature before being made available. They are strong yet delicate wines that exhibit the elegance and complexity that are unique to the tightly controlled inter-region vineyard site. Everything that occurs in the vineyard has the potential to improve the wine's quality. As a result, that is where the majority of the effort involved in making wines from the De Fazio Vineyard is done.
