History of Mercurey Wine

The town of Mercurey got its name from the Roman god of commerce, Mercur.

Mercury is considered the most important village appellation in the Côte Chalonnaise. Appellation is the area where a wine is grown, so it's also the largest type of wine in this region. The wine is labeled predominantly at its level of quality, which comes from grapes grown in one of 32 Premier Cru sites. Vines in the area, which locals refer to as "the golden valley," are sheltered by the moist air that flows north along lower elevations.

Terrior of Mercurey Wine

Soil, slope and temperature is a factor that can highly impact how the Terrior works. Mercurey's climate is considered to be of continental type, with warm, long summers and relatively dry fall months, making for an excellent growing season and harvest. Winters can be really long and you'll sometimes need to cover your vines just in case there's frost. Although Mercurey is supposedly warmer than other northern communes, the appellation's hilly topography and slightly increased altitude moderate the temperatures, allowing the wines to retain a certain freshness.

Mercurey Wine Characteristics

The wines from this region tend to be a deep color compared to their neighboring appellations, which can result in a fuller body. Some Mercurey wines are described as having spicy cherry notes but the quality can vary quite a bit. In the last 20th century, vineyards began to expand faster, but in less-favorable areas. Instead of quality viticulture, there was a focus on quantity. The increased demand for Mercurey has led to lower quality fruit. Consumers gladly accept this because of the taste. This can leave weaker fruit flavors that are more diluted with the product. The whites from the area are known for their minerality and apple notes. White wines from well-made examples typically peak between 5–12 years after vintage.
