Mayschoss- Altenahr Winery – Making Traditional Ahr Wines for 150 Years
The Mayschoss-Altenahr Winery is located in the charming Ahr Valley, surrounded by panoramic landscapes that will take your breath away. The estate’s trademark wine is red, as the main grape variety of the region is Pinot Noir.
The community collectively grows world-class grapes for the production of award-winning wines at Mayschoss-Altenahr Winery.
Cooperative, Started by 18 Winegrowing Members
Established in 1868, the Mayschoss-Altenahr Winery was started with 18 members, and Nikolaus Näkel was the president. In 1968, the estate celebrated its 100 years with about 240 members. Later in the late 20th century, the company joined Winzergenossenschaft Altenahr, and Mayschoss- Altenahr was formed with a strength of 330 members. In 2009, one more merger took place with wine cooperative – Walporzheim. At present, the winery boasts a group of 444 winemakers. In total, the vineyards are stretched over an area of 150 hectares, where the community grows world-class grapes for the production of award-winning wines, including white and red wines, along with high-quality rosé and sparkling wines.
The Winery Capacity, Cavernous Cellars, and Wine Shop
With great respect for traditional grape cultivation, the local group of Mayschoß grape growers develops various wines. Pinot Noir is the dominant grape variety, but Pinot Madeleine, Domina, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, and Müller- Thurgau are all grown in small batches. In the cellar, these grapes are carefully processed into delicate regional wines. Today, wooden barrels at Mayschoss-Altenahr Winery can store 250 thousand liters of wines and 1.8 million liters in stainless steel tanks.
The estate consists of numerous vaulted wine cellars and two well-furnished and charming wineshops. Here, the employees will guide guests through various wine tasting activities. You may buy wines, gourmet presents, gift sets, and much more during your stay.
The winery cannot host any tasting and tours for the time being.
