With vineyards located along the magnificent Mosel River, Dr. H. Thanisch Winery resides in Germany’s beautiful town of Bernkastel. Sun-drenched vineyards benefit from slate-filled soils in the region, producing some of the most exquisite Rieslings in the world.

The History of Dr. Thanisch

The history of Dr. Thanisch Winery traces back over 375 years. In the early 19th century, Dr. Hugo Thanisch acquired the estate, which later his wife took over after his untimely death. During the time of Dr. Thanisch, his white wines became famous worldwide. His two daughters continued the family tradition of winemaking and added ‘Erben Müller-Burggraef’ to the estate’s name. Today, Maximilian Ferger is in charge of the winery and has been managing the administration for over a decade. In 2015, a newly-built ultra-modern manor became the home of the winery estate.

High-Quality Winemaking at Weingut Dr. H. Thanisch

On the magnificent slopes of Bernkastel Doctor, vineyards cover an area of 16 hectares. The grape-growing is additionally extended over Bernkastel Graben, Bernkastel Lay, and Bernkastel Badstube. With a focus on quality and not quantity, the historic estate cultivates only two grape varieties, namely excellent Riesling and Pinot Noir. The wines get their finishing in a 350-years old Doctor’s Cellar. As the best bunches arrive at the cellar, they undergo soft pressing, followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks and typical German oak casks. The range of wines will delight every wine-drinking palate, whether a dry Riesling, a Kabinett style, or an Auslese wine meets your fancy. Dr. H. Thanisch wines will not disappoint.
